Who doesn't love a classic cocktail from time to time? Thanks to
Mad Men many of these drinks have become popular
again. Order one at your next happy hour or try one
of the recipes below to make your own!
Martini
Serves 4:
3/4 cup vodka or gin
2 teaspoons dry vermouth
cocktail olives
(less vermouth = drier martini)
In a cocktail shaker half full of ice cubes, combine gin or vodka and vermouth. Shake well,
and strain into martini glasses. Garnish with olives.
Manhattan
2 ounces rye whiskey or bourbon
1 ounce sweet red vermouth
2 dashes bitters
1 cup ice
maraschino cherry to garnish
Combine rye whiskey or bourbon, vermouth, bitters, and ice in a cocktail
shaker; shake well. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with the cherry.
Sidecar
6 tablespoons sugar, plus more for glasses
juice of 4 limes, plus more for garnish
6 tablespoons boiling water
1/2 cup brandy
3 tablespoons Cointreau
ice cubes
Place sugar in a saucer. Moisten the rim of a martini glass using a lime
wedge. Dip rim in sugar. In a cocktail shaker, stir together sugar and water
until sugar is dissolved. Stir in brandy, Cointreau, and lime juice. Fill with
ice cubes, and shake well. Strain into prepared glasses, and serve
with a lime twist.
Kir Royale
Serves 6:
3 ounces creme de cassis
1 bottle Champagne or sparkling white wine
6 strips tangerine or orange zest for garnish
Just before serving, pour 1 tablespoon creme de cassis into each glass. Fill
with Champagne, and garnish with zest.
